Guide to Embroidered Patches
How to assemble your motorcycle back patch. Guide to top rocker, bottom rocker, and logo.
The back patch is the heart of any motorcycle or moped club's identity. It sits on the back of the leather vest, telling the world who you are, where you belong, and what you stand for. But many newcomers – and even experienced riders – are unsure precisely what a complete back patch consists of, what rules traditionally apply, and how to get a patch embroidered that lasts and looks professional year after year.
In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know: top rocker, bottom rocker, logo/center patch, and the many details in between. And when you're ready to order, CungX is here with professional embroidery and a wide selection of leather vests perfect for wearing your new back patch with pride.
What is a motorcycle or moped back patch?
A motorcycle or moped back patch – also called a back patch or full patch – is a collection of embroidered or woven fabric patches sewn or embroidered directly onto the back of a leather vest. The back patch is not just decoration. It is a symbol of belonging, brotherhood, and club culture.
In traditional motorcycle culture, a complete three-piece patch is considered the most formal, but there are many variations – from simple one-piece patches to two-piece and three-piece sets. Regardless of the structure your club chooses, there are common principles for what the different parts mean and how they are placed.
The three main elements: top rocker, logo, and bottom rocker
1. The Top Rocker
The top rocker is the curved text strip at the top of the back patch. It typically displays the club's name and is the first thing people notice. The top rocker is embroidered at the very top of the back patch and naturally curves with the shoulder line, ensuring it sits neatly and is legible on the vest.
Typical details on the top rocker:
- Club name or group name (e.g., "IRON WOLVES" or "ROAD BROTHERS")
- Wide border in a contrasting color that defines the shape
- Letters embroidered with thick satin stitch in white, gold, or red to stand out against a dark background
- Width: typically 28–32 cm, height: approx. 5–7 cm
2. Center Patch (Logo / Middle Piece)
The center patch is the heart of the back patch and the dominant visual element. It is placed in the middle of the back between the top rocker and the bottom rocker and usually contains the club's logo, emblem, or symbol.
The center patch can be anything from a simple text circle to a complex, colorful motif with flames, skulls, animals, weapons, cross signs, or religious symbols – only your club's identity and imagination set the limits.
Shapes for center patch:
- Round: The classic shape, easy to sew and traditionally recognized
- Diamond/rhombus: Used by certain clubs with special meaning
- Freeform: Many modern moped clubs choose their own formats
- Square or rectangle: Simple and modern expression
Important considerations:
- Size: typically 25–30 cm in diameter or width
- Number of colors affects embroidery price – keep it to 4–6 colors for the best price/quality ratio
- Height-adjusted details ensure the motif is still legible from a distance
3. The Bottom Rocker
The bottom rocker sits below the center patch and curves like the top rocker – but with the curve downwards, so it naturally follows the bottom edge of the vest. The bottom rocker typically indicates geographical affiliation – either a city, a region, or a country.
Typical examples:
- "COPENHAGEN" · "JUTLAND" · "DENMARK"
- Abbreviations like "DK" or "NORTH JUTLAND"
- Some clubs use the bottom rocker to indicate chapter number or charter
The bottom rocker is an outward signal: it shows where the club operates from and is a crucial territorial element in traditional motorcycle culture, but is also used in many moped club patches to show affiliation.
Three-piece vs. one-piece patch – what does your motorcycle or moped club choose?
Three-piece back patch (1+1+1)
The classic format with top rocker, center patch, and bottom rocker as three separate pieces. In many club environments, it is considered the most formal and complete expression of an established club. The three pieces are sewn separately onto the vest.
Two-piece back patch (1+1)
Top rocker and center patch without a bottom rocker – or center patch and bottom rocker. Often used by clubs in development or by those who do not wish to mark geographical affiliation.
One-piece back patch
All elements in one single piece – combines top rocker, logo, and optionally bottom rocker in one unit. A popular solution for moped clubs, sports clubs, and social motorcycle groups who want a simple and effective expression.
At CungX, we produce all three formats – whether you want classic separate patches or a combined one-piece design with full embroidery.
Other patches on the vest: beyond the back patch
A complete motorcycle or moped look doesn't stop at the back patch. On the chest, sleeves, and collar, there can be a number of additional patches, each with its own meaning:

Materials and embroidery – why quality is everything
A back patch might be worn for decades. It's exposed to wind, rain, sun, and the wear and tear of long motorcycle rides. Therefore, the quality of embroidery and materials is crucial – not just for appearance, but for durability. At CungX, we offer professional machine embroidery with high-density satin stitching, providing the sharpest edges and most durable result. At CungX, we use industrial embroidery machines and top-quality threads that won't fade or fray over time.
How to design your back patch – step by step
Step 1: Decide the club's identity
What should the patch convey? Note the club name, geographical affiliation, and which symbols best represent the club. This is the cornerstone of the entire design, whether you're a moped or motorcycle club.
Step 2: Choose structure
Three-piece, two-piece or one-piece? Use our guide above to decide what suits your club and traditions.
Step 3: Create a design
You can create a draft yourself, for example in Canva, Illustrator, or even ChatGPT, and send it to us. The more detailed your draft, the faster we can translate it into an embroidered version. We also accept logos in JPG, PNG, or PDF format from customers.
Step 4: Choose colors
At CungX, we have a large selection of colors that can be chosen once the design is established, and some of the considerations to take into account when choosing are:
- The background color of the vest (black, brown, denim)
- Contrast colors that stand out from a distance
- Max 4–6 colors for the best visual result
